KU hosts a yearly state recognition program for about 400 seventh-grade students selected for the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Duke TIP is a nonprofit educational organization that identifies and helps cultivate the talents of academically gifted youth. Selection is based on college entrance exams that are in the top 5 percent while the students are in middle school. Each youth honored receives a medallion in a ceremony
at the Lied Center.
Since 1997, 40 to 45 faculty and staff have boarded a bus at the University of Kansas in Lawrence for a "whirlwind" tour of the state in May. The Wheat State Whirlwind Tour endeavors to bring a select group of KU personnel into a closer relationship with Kansans through a five-day statewide tour. The 2009 tour has been canceled due to state budget restrictions.

The fair provides KU with a unique opportunity to showcase who we are and how we serve the state. The KU booth is a popular stop during the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Several volunteers from KU campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Kan., Overland Park and Wichita staff the booth during the fair's 10-day run. Approximately 300,000 people annually attend the Kansas State Fair.

Family/Band Day is a great opportunity for parents and families to visit with students and participate in activities across campus. Scheduled to take place in September, many events have been planned with assistance from a wide range of university departments and offices in order to make the best of your visit to the University of Kansas.
Every March KU employees travel to the Statehouse to promote dozens of university programs and KU before an influential audience of policy-makers and other state officials — many of whom are KU alumni.
